Born June 7, 1944 in Sauda on the west coast of Norway, a provincial industry town
where the North American concern Union Carbide exploited local waterpower in order to
run one of the largest manganese smelt works in the world. American capital,
waterpower from the Norwegian "rain coast", ore from Africa's Gold Coast: in other
words, an international community highly sensitive to variations in the world economy.
Completed secondary school in 1963. Thereafter experience as a seaman and industry worker. Longer sojourns in Spain and Latin America. Architectural studies at Norway's Tekniske Høgskole in Trondheim, and philology at universities in Bergen and Oslo. Since 1971 an independent author, for the most part in Oslo, additionally in Finnmark, Northern Norway, and in various South American metropolises, particularly Buenos Aires. Experience with modern industrialism most important vantage point for authorship which to a great extent has revolved around the meeting of cultures, the mixing of languages, historical transitions, syncretism, polyphony, modernity and exile. ![]() Translated by Deborah Miller
